Treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
At Center for Brief Therapy

What is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) ?

ADHD is one of the most commonly diagnosed conditions in children.  It is described as chronic and pervasive and is
diagnosed in areas of inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity.  The most frequently described symptoms are difficulty
sustaining attention (frequently on activities the child does not like), not following through on instructions, being easily
distracted, fidgeting, talking excessively, and interrupting others.  In many cases teachers first notice problems because the
child does not complete assignments, even though he or she is very capable.  They shout out answers without raising their
hand or they interrupt or intrude on conversations.  In some cases parents may begin to hear that their child has difficulty
with his friendships and may feel he or she is not liked.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of ADHD is made through an assessment of the child’s behavior, parent and teacher reports, and a detailed
history of development, family, social skills, behavior, and physical or psychological illnesses.
