Cognitive Behavior Therapy: An Introduction: Conceptualization, Techniques and Methods

One Day Workshop
An introduction to the Cognitive Therapy model will be discussed in terms of assessment, diagnosis, conceptualization,
and treatment.        

This workshop will briefly review the theoretical, conceptual, and developmental issues in the etiology and treatment of
patients described in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, 4th Edition-Text Revision (DSM IV-TR, 2000) using a C.T.
framework.

Among the topics to be covered in the workshop will be:

1.  The basic steps of cognitive therapy: An overview of the model
2.  Conceptualization through assessment and diagnostic criteria;
3.  Conducting your first session: How to structure your time
4.   Identifying initial problems and goals
5.   How to identify, evaluate and respond to automatic thoughts
6.   Methods to increase compliance with homework: Impediments to Change
7.   Common medical problems: Integrating physical and psychological treatment
8.   Use of the Freeman's Diagnostic Profile System
9.   Preventing relapse
10. Differentiation of substance misuse and personality disordered behaviors

Teaching techniques will include didactic presentation clinical examples to illustrate cognitive therapy in action using
videotaped sessions.

Workshop Objectives
At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
*        Identify and describe the steps required to develop a Cognitive Behavioral treatment conceptualization for
treating patients
*        Use the Diagnostic Profiling System (DPS) to gather data and direct the therapy plan
*        Define four areas of impediment to therapeutic progress
*        Describe substance misusing presentations that may be mistaken for personality disorder
*        Describe the rationale for using cognitive and behavioral interventions
*        Identify five cognitive interventions for treating patients
*        Identify five behavioral interventions for treating patients
